Thanks for a really great series! Dumb question: why isn't the prior the control group's distribution?

I followed your posts and know that the prior is used to calculate the posterior distribution for control/treatment, but why is this step needed? It almost seems like we're calculating lift between pre-experiment data and during-experiment data, then comparing those lifts between control/treatment to get our treatment lift.
